Into the future of data for share with a tech audit
Situation
- share was founded in 2018 with a focus on sustainability and social responsibility — with well-known partners such as Deutsche Bahn, Rewe or Rossmann, the brand is now known throughout Germany
- The company now offers over 100 products, with each purchase resulting in a donation to recognized national and international aid organizations
- share recognized the importance of its own data storage and processing early on and invested in a modern data infrastructure
Complication
- Increasing demands on the existing data platform due to company growth and expansion of its own e-commerce sales channel
- Limited internal resources and sparring opportunities on the topic of Modern Data Stack
Solution
- Carrying out a rapid tech audit to identify weak points and optimization potential
- Review of the entire data stack: Airbyte, dbt, Snowflake, PowerBI
- Recommendation of short, medium and long-term measures to improve data quality, data availability, cost efficiency and the application of best practices
Added value
- Quick status quo through rapid implementation of the project
- Specific recommendations for action to optimize the data stack
- Certainty for the further development of the data stack
Quick tech audit for sustainable data growth at share
Whether as a frequent traveler on the ICE through the small chocolates or in the supermarket at the cash register — we also encounter the share brand more and more frequently. We were all the more pleased when we were asked whether we could help share to check their own data stack.
As a start-up in the FMCG sector, share committed on a modern data stack architecture early on and thus set the course for data-driven decisions. With Airbyte for data integration, dbt for transformations, Snowflake as a data warehouse and PowerBI for visualizations, the foundation was solid.
But as is often the case in the life of a growing company, success also brought new challenges. The increasing variety of products and, in particular, the expansion of the company's own e-commerce channel placed greater demands on the existing infrastructure. It was clear to the data team at share: This requires a fresh view from outside and practical expertise.
In a compact, four-days project, we took a close look at the entire data stack. Our approach? Pragmatic and solution-oriented! Instead of endless workshops, we worked directly with the data, carried out code reviews and got to know the team's daily challenges. We then summarized the results of our tech audit in a clear action plan, which we divided into short, medium and long-term recommendations.
With our recommendations, share can now operate its own data setup more cost-effectively and sustainably develop it for the next few years. And that is exactly what projects like this are about for us: providing technical solutions that create real business added value.
In the case of share, this ultimately also means making more positive social impact possible — and that's the nicest form of data impact, isn't it?
This is what Mikhail Kozyrev (Director of Data, IT & Online) share says:
“The external perspective gave us exactly the impetus we needed. The Data Institute's fast and professional approach has convinced us in the long term. Now we can start the next phase of growth with confidence.”
